APRIL 2022

Nissan 5782

RUACH:

SHABBATON: SATURDAY, APRIL 2 !!!(Including Havadalah Service, later that day, see below for details!!)

We are thrilled to have Reb Lavey Derby lead us in a Shabbaton online this Saturday April 2 at 10 AM.  It is also the first Saturday of the month, so you may very well want to start the morning with the Goldens for a mostly silent guided meditation.

The Meditation will take place from 9-9:30.

Reb Lavey will begin at 10AM. He has said that there will be singing and, we are sure, some words of wisdom.

Here is the schedule for the Shabbaton:

Service 10:00-11:15

Short break

Teaching about Passover 11:30- 12:30

Closing song

Havdalah 7:15  Later that evening we will reconvene for a Havdalah service which will begin with Ellen Tobe leading us in otiot chayot – a meditative movement based on the Hebrew letter and vowel sounds.  The practice will then take us into havdalah with a brief teaching on havdalah and then the ceremony. If you have, please bring your own candle, wine or beverage, and spices to the service.

All these services and meditations will take place in the Shir Hayam Zoom Room

As usual, if you have trouble getting in, you may call Mike at 360 297-4228

COORDINATING COMMITTEE

Coordinating Committee (CC) Minutes for 3/27/22 Meeting via Zoom:

Present:  Jon Garfunkel, Jane Greenberg, Jessica Lang, Sharon Rutzick, Cay Vandervelde

1.  Jane urged we try to keep the CC meetings to one hour.

2.  Cay reviewed community comments received on our Governance Documents (primarily our Bylaws and Handbook) from several members.  Two comments were actionable and incorporated into the Documents.  It was moved and seconded that this version of the Documents be approved with no further community review necessary.

3.  Sharon and Jon will work as a Nominating Committee, seeking a slate of 1-3 new members to be voted upon at the Annual Meeting to serve on next year’s CC. Jon, Paul, and Jane will stay on to complete the second year of their two-year terms; Sharon will have completed two full terms and is stepping down.  Jessica has also completed two full terms and may stay on; Cay has completed one full term and may stay on.

4.  Budget Requests from CC to each Committee for the next fiscal year will be sent out shortly, with Budgets based on our donation income from our current year of about $11,000.  The CC Request to the Committees will be accompanied by the Summary of the Visioning Meeting.  The CC welcomes and encourages Committees to make this a year of new projects and innovation which could be funded by Special Requests to the CC for funding from our Retained Earnings/Savings.  At the end of the next fiscal year, CC will evaluate this process.

5.  Logistics for our upcoming Annual Meeting (to be held on Sunday, May 22 from 10 am – noon) were discussed with maximum attendance being our main consideration in deciding whether the meeting be via outdoors, zoom, or a hybrid.  Some discussion began about CC’s Budget itself as well as possible Agenda items for the Annual Meeting.

6.  There was general discussion about our two recent meetings – Visioning and Retained Earnings/Savings – what they reflected about our chavurah community, as well as quorum requirements for decision-making and the consensus model.

Next Meeting:  4/24, 10-12 via Zoom:  https://www.is.gd/cshzoomp/

Agenda:  JCW Report, CC Budget Suggestions, Reconcile Committee Budget Requests, Assign CC contacts with Committees to provide feedback to bring to Annual Meeting, Nominating Committee feedback, Annual Meeting Prep/Agenda

SAVE THE DATE !!

ANNUAL MEETING:  Sunday, 5/22 10am-12

NEWS ABOUT OUR TORAH:

From the Memorial Scolls Trust Newsletter:

Save the Date – 60th anniversary Scroll Gathering, London, 2024

Dear Friends

Welcome to the 24th edition of our Newsletter.

We are delighted to announce Westminster Synagogue will host a Scroll Gathering at Kent House 4th February 2024.

1564 scrolls that survived the Shoah in Prague, were saved from further deterioration under the communists and brought to London in 1964, thanks to the generosity of Ralph Yablon who donated them to the Westminster Synagogue. Subsequently the Memorial Scrolls Trust was set-up as an independent charity to care for the scrolls, retaining close links with the synagogue.

Westminster Synagogue and the Memorial Scrolls Trust look forward to welcoming Scroll Holder Communities and their scrolls to our celebratory service to mark the rescue of the scrolls and their arrival in Knightsbridge, London.
