HIGH HOLIDAYS 2020/5781

We could not actually be together in person this year and yet we have moved through these momentous High Holydays of 5781 as a community with spirit and intentionality.  We acknowledged what we have been through, what we have lost, some things we have learned, and concern about what we face ahead.  Our prayers, our songs, our stories, poems, and thoughts expressed, our history, learning and questioning, our silences – all l carried us through, and hopefully help strengthen our resolve in facing challenges we know and those we cannot anticipate. Many thanks to all who helped lead us – Robin, Cay, Dee, Jeff, Jon, Maddy, Nina and Sharon, Dick and Linda – for their efforts, creativity, thoughtfulness, providing comfort and opportunities for expression.

Deep thanks also to Bill Rappaport and Dee for their soulful Kol Nidres, to Cay, Dee, and Terry for their musical leadership and innovation using a medium that does not lend itself to music, to those who brought readings and drashes to us, to Jeff for the shofar’s calls, and to those, following in the footsteps of Jews over the centuries who wrote prayers in response to their times, who crafted fragments for our own chavurah’s poem to these days.  No services would have been possible without the technical assistance of Mike, Paul, and Rachel, with special thanks to Rachel who made sure we all knew in advance of every gathering and provided easy access to all services and learning materials.

Finally, the lively guitars and imagination and initiative of Jon and Jeff in helping bring the Torah and Ark to us after all these months, brought heartfelt joy to all.  The kind faces in every square and smiles of encouragement of all attending, and the presence and participation of our far flung children, members, and friends really helped sustain a lovely spirit throughout.

TIKKUN OLAM

CROP Hunger Walk. The Chavurat brought in over $1,300 during our virtual walk this year, and still counting. Denise Brown walked every day except for 4 days due to the CA & OR fire smoke averaging 4.3 miles per day (2.7 miles including the smoke days.Bainbridge Island, to date, has raised over $13,500; compared to last year raising a total of $13,678 we are well on our way to beating that number.

Super Supper. Because of COVID 19, Super Supper has been put on hold. To compensate for this loss the BARN and others have offered meals every Friday to those who wish. Shir Hayam has issued a check to the Interfaith Council for $300;they can forward this to the BARN, or use for other Super Supper expenses.

HAPPENING ONLINE

Beth Shalom in Seattle is offering a class starting on November 4th:

Judaism and Black Lives Matter

with Adam Gillman

We will be exploring traditional and contemporary texts, both Jewish and non, as well as the spirit, to prepare ourselves for engaging in the hands-on and inner work of racial justice. As our society and community awaken to the fact and ensuring that Black lives matter, we will engage in the ongoing conversation of traditional text study along with present-day sources. This course series will be led by Adam Gillman (he, him, his). who grew up at Beth Shalom and is eager to build connections once again. Adam is currently studying to become a rabbi at JTS along with a MA in experiential Jewish education. As a cisgender male, engaging in the work of dismantling racism goes hand in hand with Jewish tradition and practice.

  • Dates: Nov. 4 – Dec. 9, 2020 (6 sessions)
