Saturday December 8th 5:00 – 9:00 pm at the UCC Church in Suquamish. 18732 Division Ave NE.

We’ll cook up fresh latkes, play games, light candles, sing, dance, eat, celebrate community, and more! Fun for all ages! Bring your menorah, latke batter and a latke topping to share and a potluck item would be lovely too! We also need volunteers to set up and decorate, clean-up, help fry latkes. Call Robin Hruska, Lisa Weiss or Zann Jacobrown. Hope to see you there.

THE NEW COLOSSUS

The 14th annual Interfaith Council Thanksgiving Service took place on Thursday, November 20th at Rolling Bay Presbtyterian Church. The theme was “Welcoming the Stranger” and included a special offering for the Kitsap Immigrant Assistance Center. A myriad of faith groups were represented by members singing & speaking. Our own Jeff Brown was the closing speaker.  His speech included the words of Emma Lazarus, written over a hundred years ago and famously emblazoned on the Statue of Liberty – worth repeating here.

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
