COMMUNITY

Our condolences to Michele Lyons on the recent death of her fourteen year old cousin in Vancouver, B.C., a loss beyond words.

A mishebeirach and all good wishes to Joanna Church for a speedy recovery and complete healing.

We gathered to honor Tree of Life Synagogue . On Tuesday evening, October 30, about 25 members of Shir Hayam gathered at Julie, David and Bayla’s house to talk about the terrible tragedy at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh during last Saturday’s morning services. We brought our hurt and anger, and our prayers for those in Pittsburgh and Jews everywhere. We shared our sadness and expressed our collective fear. There was a unified feeling that we must stand in community – connected with other minorities, and supportive others, so that together we create a broad base of justice and equity. Robin Hruska made two wonderful cards that we all signed: one for the members and survivors at Tree of Life synagogue, and one to thank the Pittsburgh Police Department for stepping into the massacre to protect the congregation, and had four of their own officers wounded. After reciting Kaddish we enjoyed the bounty of fruit and cookies we all brought to share.

SPIRITUAL RESILIENCE JOURNAL WORKSHOP

Thank you to Robin Hruska who hosted the workshop, provided all the materials and shared her bookmaking skills (at the very basic level!) and got us all off to a great start making our spiritual resilience journals. We’ll be singing “…in the middle.. to the top.. all the way to the bottom” for days.

Following the morning forum, about 12 individuals will have an opportunity to carpool to the NW Detention Center in north Tacoma, meet with an activist from NWDC-Resistance and with individuals who are currently in detention. Last year this “field trip” was hugely impactful for those who participated, so we decided to repeat the event and hopefully reach more people. It was moving to hear firsthand about immigrants’ experiences in detention. Space is limited, with priority to TBA members and Spanish speakers.  RSVP required: Email susan.schulkin@gmail.com.
