RUACH:

HIGH HOLIDAYS 5784:

The High Holidays began in the glory of late summer, radiant, warm, with blue skies as we began Rosh Hashonah services. Perfect weather to compliment the promise of a New Year.

By the time Kol Nidre arrived, we were thrust quickly into Autumn, with rain, winds, cooler temperatures, and shorter, darker days. The weather, like the mood, had become contemplative, reflective, inner-directed, and our services reflected this. The weather outside our Shul resonated with the inner work we were doing in the Shul.

This year, our Chavurah seemed so connected, intensely focused, awake, and aware to others and to the questions our own souls were asking.

Led by Reb Lavey, whose stories and prayers gave us spiritual guidance and inspiration, we sang, played music, prayed, chanted, stood in silence amidah, shared stories and poems, and came together in community to share these very meaningful Days of Awe. Our bodies were activated as well, as Ellen Tobe led us to shape Hebrew letters and words with OTIOT CHAYOT, a movement akin to T’ai Chi.

These high holidays exemplified the purpose, the meaning, and the joy of our Chavurah – a community of connected individuals and families, unified by our commitment and love of our Jewish tradition, and of our engaged and supportive Chavurah.

Ellen and Reb Lavey are back home safe and sound after their time with us. Reb Lavey left us with a parting request: “We said this inidividually to as many people as we could, but please pass on to every single member our thanks for the wonderful time we’ve had with you all!”

Kantika”, a Sephardic Novel by Author Elizabeth Graver

For those of you who read “Kantika” (and for those interested in reading it), the Stroum Center for Jewish Studies at the University of WA is presenting, via Zoom, a discussion with the author:

Sunday, December 3, 10:00 am PST – 11:00 am PST

Join Isaac Alhadeff Professor of Sephardic Studies Devin E. Naar in conversation with author Elizabeth Graver as she discusses her moving, multi-generational saga inspired by her grandmother. Rebecca née Cohen Baruch Levy was born into a Sephardic Jewish family from Istanbul in the early 20th century, and her kaleidoscopic journey takes her to Barcelona, Havana, and ultimately New York, exploring themes of displacement, endurance, and family as home.

Kantikameaning “song” in Ladino— is a lush, lyrical novel which celebrates the legacy of language, and the insistence on seizing beauty and grabbing hold of one’s one and only life.

“Far from being a Pollyannaish tale of New World success, Kantika is a meticulous endeavor to preserve the memories of a family, an elegy and a celebration both. — Ayten Tartici, New York Times, April 2023

Kitsap Immigrant Assistance Center (KIAC) – is a Shir Hayam beneficiary

Shir Hayam has been supporting KIAC for several years – with its precious personal time by some Chavurah members, and its annual donations…. in addition to the occasional ‘GoGundMe’ request!

The in-person volunteer work is extremely inspiring (and open to anyone interested in either Family Services or Legal Services…!).  Please let Cay Vandervelde know if you would like to hear more!  She volunteers in the legal services area and has had the privilege of working with Asylum, Violence Against Women, Victims of Criminal Activity and Legal Permanent Resident applicants from Afghanistan, Colombia, Spain, Denmark, Mexico and Guatemala. There is room for volunteer time commitments at all different levels…. so please consider whether this would be a fulfilling Tikkun Olam project for you!

To get a feel for KIAC’s ‘August Numbers’ – and to feel glad for Shir Hayam’s general support for this important work – have a look at the summary, below:

Update from the town of Chelm:

A Shir Hayam member received this update from the Village of Chelm:

A young scholar of Chelm, innocent in the ways of earthly matters, was stunned one morning recently when his wife gave birth. Quickly he ran to the rabbi.

“Rabbi,” he blurted out, “an extraordinary thing has happened! Please explain it to me. My wife has just given birth although we have been married only three months! How can this be? Everyone knows it takes nine months for a baby to be born!”

The rabbi, a world-renowned sage, put on his silver-rimmed spectacles and furrowed his brow reflectively.

“My son,” he said, “I can see you haven’t the slightest idea about such matters, nor can make the simplest calculation. Let me ask you: Have you lived with your wife three months?”

“Yes.”

“She has lived with you three months?”

“Yes.”

“Together – have you lived three months?”

“Yes.”

“What’s the total then – three months plus three plus three?”

“Nine months, Rabbi!”

“So… what is the problem?”

BOOK CLUB:

Continuing our tour of Jews in seemingly unlikely places. . .

Join us on Sunday, March 19 at 11:00 for a Zoom book discussion about Jews in India. Read either (or both) of the books below, then meet in the Zoom Room at 11:00.

The Book of Esther by Esther David

The Book of Esther recreates in detail the lives of the Bene Israel community in a small village on the south India coast. It begins in the 19th century and continues through five generations until recent times.

The Walled City by Esther David

The Walled City is set in Ahmedabad and is a coming-of-age story about a young Bene Israeli girl growing up in the walled city, attempting to preserve her Jewish roots without understanding them. As violence engulfs the city, the concept of walls takes on a new layered epiphany.

Here’s some  background on the Jews of India:

The Jewish community has been living in India since 75 CE.

Many Jews settled in India after fleeing coastal areas of what is now Israel after the fall of King Solomon’s second temple. They sought to avoid persecution from the Greeks.

There are five Indian Jewish communities — the Bene Israelis of western India, the Bnei Menashe Jews of Northeast India, the Bene Ephraims of Andhra Pradesh, the Baghdadi Jews of West Bengal and the Cochin Jews of Kerala.

Despite living in different corners of India, they are still bound by the common thread of food and religion. Over the years, members have stuck to the dietary laws and integrated Indian habits with their customs, leading to some unique ceremonies and rituals that have been passed down from one generation to another.

At its height in the 1940s, there were about 20,000 Jews in India. There are now about 5,000.

4/3 TALK | Sarah Zaides Rosen on “Tevye’s Ottoman Daughter”

Monday, April 3, 4:00 pm PDT – 5:00 pm PDT

REGISTER NOW >

This talk will introduce listeners not only to a fascinating Jewish community where Sephardic Jews were the majority (and Ashkenazi Jews the minority), but also to the ways in which Sephardic Jews responded to a refugee crisis, and in turn how they contended with contemporary political ideas, including Zionism.

In this talk, historian and Stroum Center for Jewish Studies’ Assistant Director Sarah Zaides Rosen will trace the story of 19th- and 20th-century Russian Jews who left the Pale of Settlement, crossed the Black Sea and arrived in Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul), all in the twilight years of the Russian and Ottoman Empires.

BIMA FILM SERIES FEATURING FILMS BY LEE GRANT:

From the curator of the Series:

Dear Shir Hayam:

My name is Tova and I am curating an upcoming film series at BIMA Friday March 17th & Saturday March 18th. I’m wondering if you would be interested in letting your congregants know about this series. We would be honored and delighted to be in your newsletter!

Lee Grant was a pioneer documentarian. She won an oscar for Shampoo directed by Hal Ahby in 1977 and then left Hollywood! She wanted to direct films about the injustices she saw and heard about in America. Think how documentaries on social issues are par for the course now on Netflix and other channels. When Ms. Grant started out there were next to none. She pitched ideas to HBO and they sent her out to the field. I had the pleasure of speaking with her daughter Dinah Manoff via zoom. At 97 Ms. Grant is of sharp mind and wit. She is very excited we are playing her documentaries which she calls her spiritual films on our very special Island.

There will be two screenings each day. A matinee starting at 2 pm and an evening screening beginning at 7 pm. Dinah will be in conversation with me before the evening screenings. BIMA and I are so grateful for the generous sponsorship by Moskin & Vitale Real Estate of Bainbridge Island, without which we wouldn’t be able to screen this series.

Sincerely,
Tova Gannana

Jews in India:

Continuing our tour of Jews in seemingly unlikely places. . .

In December and January we read books and listened to lectures about Jews in China. It was fascinating. In February and March we’re moving on to Jews in India.

We’ll be reading one (or both, for those of who are feeling ambitious) of the books below. We’ll meet by Zoom on March 19 at 11:00 to discuss what we’ve learned.

The book(s) to read are:

The Book of Esther by Esther David

The Book of Esther recreates in detail the lives of the Bene Israel in a small village on the Konkan coast, Danda, and charts their journeys. Beginning in the 19th century with Bathsheba, who awaits her husband’s return, Book of Esther tells the story of her adored grandson, David, a healer of great repute, whose eccentric animal-obsessed son, Joshua, is the author’s father. The fifth generation’s retelling of the clan’s tale goes back to the story of the origins of the community, and the last part about herself and her father’s zoo is as funny as it is moving.

Update on BI/ North Kitsap Interfaith Council (IFC)

Sharon Rutzick provided this update about IFC, to which our Chavurah has been an active member for many years:

The IFC sponsored another beautiful Thanksgiving Interfaith celebration on the theme of “Gratitude to Mother Earth” with music, readings, and featuring speakers from the Suquamish Nation and Cedars Unitarian Universalist Church.

Thanks to Jeff Brown for representing Shir Hayam in the candle lighting ceremony.

In terms of social action, the IFC meetings address many topics, from gun control to trans awareness.  At last Thursday’s meeting, we had a presentation of work being done by two members on developing a Climate Pledge for faith communities and a report by John Kydd who had just returned from the Climate Change Conference at Sharm el-Sheikh.  It can be overwhelming when considering the major challenges facing us as human beings, as Jews, right now – gun proliferation and violence, war, racial, religious, and gender prejudice and hatred, immigration, political polarization – it’s a long, powerful list.  And at least as important, and perhaps overarching, is climate change.

The IFC CLIMATE CIRCLE is perhaps one place where we might consider committing some effort as a community.  The Climate Circle will be addressing both personal and communal ways we can approach climate change, and hopefully political ways as well.  For one thing, they will be asking different faith communities what efforts they have made to reduce their carbon footprints so that we may learn from each other.  I am very proud that Shir Hayam began these discussions long ago, and perhaps we can also consider what other communities have done or are doing.  They will also be asking each of our local faith communities to consider signing the Climate Pledge that is being developed.

If any Shir Hayamers are interested in joining the IFC Climate Circle, they would be very welcome.  Please contact Mike Cox at 206.799.3725

REQUEST from Sharon:

I will not be able to attend the IFC meetings in February and March.  Is anyone interested and available to go to either or both of these meetings?  They will be on Thursday, February 2 from 6:30 till 8 p.m., and Thursday, March 2, from 6:30-8 p.m. I can forward you the meeting locations when I receive them and the speakers and/or topic for each session. If available, please contact me at sharonrutzick@gmail.com or call 206.393.7300

TISHREI – CHESHVAN 5783

RUACH

Our deep gratitude to Reb Lavey for all his planning and thoughtfulness in leading us through this High Holiday season.  His collaborative efforts beforehand, appreciation for the words of our speakers and of all our community’s work was obvious.  His inspiring tales, provocative teaching, the powerful poetry he selected, enthusiastic chants, and his wisdom and incredibly large heart carried us throughout to Yom Kippur’s conclusion under the stars.  Thanks also to Ellen for teaching us the Otiot for “Mayim/Water” at Tashlich and Reading during Kol Nidre.

It’s not too late to continue reflecting on this year’s theme: “Who – or what – is calling you?”, and “Where does the call originate?”

An incredibly heartfelt “Thank You” to all of Shir Hayam.  Almost every member participated in a significant way or ways that contributed to our wonderful High Holidays this year – be it designing ads for our services and publishing them in local newspapers, designing, copying, and mailing the High Holiday flyers to us that announced these services, arranging for use of Fil-Am Hall, providing sound and zoom equipment, Fil-Am Hall set-up, decoration, and clean-up, carrying Torah and Ark From home to Hall, providing Shir Hayam information, challah, wine, juice, candles, lanterns, and flowers – all provided a lovely framework for our High Holiday home this year.  Led by Terry and Dee, the Kugs, guitarist Jon, and drummer Dick, put in much time preparing, as did our incredible trio, Bill Rappaport on clarinet, and vocalists Carol Shakow, and Dee Axelrod whose three Kol Nidre renditions were so stirring.  Our Speakers – Dick Golden, Caroline Stevens, Jeff Brown, and Eric Stevens – gave much of themselves, and we deeply appreciate their forethought, insights, and courage.  Poetry Readers were able to make each poem feel personal.  Whether it was lighting candles, opening and closing the Ark, carrying and dresssing the Torah, blowing the Shofar, or playing guitar and harmonica, members participated in meaningful ways throughout, and we are thankful for all.

Robin and Dee spent countless hours readying Machzors for each service, chant sheets, Poetry booklets and Service guides for the Kugelettes, as Robin kept track of myriad details.   Terry and Dee also spent much time teaching and preparing music for the Kugelettes.  And finally, a most heartfelt Thank You to Robin and Mike for offering their incredibly gracious hospitality to Lavey and Ellen from Rosh Hashanah through Yom Kippur.  So again, thanks and L’Shana Tova to all in 5783, and now, on to the rest of the High Holidays – our Sukkot/Simchat Torah combo!

NEWS

FROM THE MEMORIAL SCROLLS TRUST:

Shana Tovah U’metukah

Thanks to the generosity of Ralph Yablon z’l,  1,564 Torah and other scrolls that had survived the Shoah were saved from further destruction under Communism by being brought to London.

The Westminster Synagogue held a service in 1965 to remember the lives of those Czech Jews who had died in the Shoah, and to assure that their memory would continue in your use of the Czech Survivor Torah Scrolls. Chief Rabbi Israel Brody led the people in saying kaddish. This was the first of many Czech scroll-gatherings that continue to take place around the world.

The Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center in White Plains NY organized a scroll gathering in White Plains NY on Yom HaShoah. As we prepare ourselves for the New Year, looking forward to the future, we also remember our family and friends who have passed away, as well as the Jews and Jewish life so tragically destroyed in the Shoah.

With our best wishes for 5783.

HIGH HOLIDAYS

We are so pleased to be welcoming Reb Lavey Derby to lead us again for the High Holidays. Last year was such a special time, infused with his warmth, humanity, wisdom and wonderful, enlightening stories. It made the time together, after a year and a half of online services and events, that much more special. For those of you who are new to the community and are not familiar with Reb Lavey (or just Lavey as he prefers to be called), he comes from a long line of rabbis dating back to perhaps the 1400’s. But here is a link to his website so you can get a sense of who he is and what he teaches. We are looking forward to the richness of our time with him.

https://reblavey.com/

High Holidays will be much later in the season this year, Erev Rosh Hashanah is Sunday, September 25 It means that we will be meeting indoors. It was lovely to have such a special outdoor space last year, but that seems unwise given the date. We are excited to be meeting indoors again- masks will be required for all attendees. Services will be available live via Zoom for those not able to attend in person.

Below are the dates and times for services.

UKRAINE FUNDRAISER:

Chavurat Shir Hayam participated in Bainbridge’s July 4th celebration by having a booth at the street fair. The booth gave SH a chance to hand out updated brochures, collect the names of people interested in finding out more about us, and, generally, to make our presence felt. The day marked one of the first times SH members have gathered in person in several years.

Sales of baked goods at the SH booth also served as a fundraiser toward the resettlement in Kitsap of several Ukrainian refugees who are personal friends of local business-owner Thormod Skald. Since the women fled Ukraine in the wake of the Russian invasion, Thor has been supporting them. A staunch cadre of SH bakers made mass quantities of mandelbrot, rugelach and honey cakes to sell, and more than $1,000 was raised.

Svetlana and Alla, two of Thor’s friends currently waiting in refugee camps in Slovenia, sent ‘thank you’ messages. [Although addressed to Dee, the thanks are really due to all SH participants.]

CULTURAL EVENTS

On Sunday morning, July 19, a group of Shir Hayamers gathered in the sunshine to discuss the book The Man in the White Sharkskin Sui by Lucette Lagnado,  a memoir about her childhood with her Jewish family who had been expelled from Egypt in 1952 and had subsequently immigrated to the US. In addition to the 10 folks present several others who were unable to attend in person zoomed in. We also had the pleasure of zooming with Carol R’s mother as well as her friend, Danielle Barcilon who, like the author, had been the child of an Egyptian Jewish family with a similar history of expulsion in 1952 and immigration to the US. Much of the discussion included Danielle who thoughtfully and graciously answered our multitude of questions.

Thank you, Jane, for suggesting this interesting book, and Carol R for bringing Danielle to the discussion.

COMMUNITY:

Best wishes and continued recovery to Robin Simons, Rachel Kerbrat, and Steve Soltar.

Shir Hayam Booth, July 4, 2022: City of Bainbridge Island July 4th Celebration

Shir Hayam learned that local business owner Thor Skald, owner of Viking Feast Ice Cream, and himself an immigrant, had engineered the escape of eight of his Ukrainian friends, and was supporting them in Slovenian and Polish refugee camps. Inspired by Thor’s generosity, and his actions to help his friends, several members of Shir Hayam initiated a bake sale, baked all the goods, and set up a booth at the City of Bainbridge Island’s 4th of July festivities. The sale netted $810 – all of which will go to help the refugees whom Thor helped to escape from Ukraine.

Thanks to bakers Dee Axelrod, Rachel Kerbrat, Robin Hruska, Denise Brown, Jill Onewein, Sharon Rutzick, and Linda Golden who made incredibly tasting Mandelbrot and Rugelach!

And thanks to those who staffed the booth during the 4th: Denise, Robin, Linda, Rachel, Paul Kerbrat, Nina Rogozen, Mike Orr, Carol Shakow, Dick Golden, Michele Lyons, Jessica Lang, Jane Davis, and her two daughters Emma and Leah.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Our deepest condolences to Rachel and Paul Kerbrat and their family on the loss of Rachel’s mother, Esther Benjoya Wolf. Esther was born in Brooklyn, NY to parents who had immigrated to the US from Turkey. She raised Rachel and Beth with her husband Jerry in LA where she earned her teaching credential, and lived and worked in Seattle for many years until her death at 95 a few weeks ago.  For Kugelettes and others in our Shir Hayam community, Esther brought her infectious love of life and joy of Sephardic culture, music, belly dancing, and Ladino to us, along with her delicious fritada espinaca for Passovers.  She was inspiring –  devoted to her grandchildren, committed to her students, passionate about justice and progressive politics, an athlete, and a gifted artist.  May memories of Esther and her life be a blessing to the Kerbrats and all who knew her.

COORDINATING COMMITTEE

Coordinating Committee (CC) Minutes for 3/27/22 Meeting via Zoom:

Present:  Jon Garfunkel, Jane Greenberg, Jessica Lang, Sharon Rutzick, Cay Vandervelde

1.  Jane urged we try to keep the CC meetings to one hour.

2.  Cay reviewed community comments received on our Governance Documents (primarily our Bylaws and Handbook) from several members.  Two comments were actionable and incorporated into the Documents.  It was moved and seconded that this version of the Documents be approved with no further community review necessary.

3.  Sharon and Jon will work as a Nominating Committee, seeking a slate of 1-3 new members to be voted upon at the Annual Meeting to serve on next year’s CC. Jon, Paul, and Jane will stay on to complete the second year of their two-year terms; Sharon will have completed two full terms and is stepping down.  Jessica has also completed two full terms and may stay on; Cay has completed one full term and may stay on.

4.  Budget Requests from CC to each Committee for the next fiscal year will be sent out shortly, with Budgets based on our donation income from our current year of about $11,000.  The CC Request to the Committees will be accompanied by the Summary of the Visioning Meeting.  The CC welcomes and encourages Committees to make this a year of new projects and innovation which could be funded by Special Requests to the CC for funding from our Retained Earnings/Savings.  At the end of the next fiscal year, CC will evaluate this process.

5.  Logistics for our upcoming Annual Meeting (to be held on Sunday, May 22 from 10 am – noon) were discussed with maximum attendance being our main consideration in deciding whether the meeting be via outdoors, zoom, or a hybrid.  Some discussion began about CC’s Budget itself as well as possible Agenda items for the Annual Meeting.

6.  There was general discussion about our two recent meetings – Visioning and Retained Earnings/Savings – what they reflected about our chavurah community, as well as quorum requirements for decision-making and the consensus model.

Next Meeting:  4/24, 10-12 via Zoom:  https://www.is.gd/cshzoomp/

Agenda:  JCW Report, CC Budget Suggestions, Reconcile Committee Budget Requests, Assign CC contacts with Committees to provide feedback to bring to Annual Meeting, Nominating Committee feedback, Annual Meeting Prep/Agenda

From the Memorial Scolls Trust Newsletter:

Save the Date – 60th anniversary Scroll Gathering, London, 2024

Dear Friends

Welcome to the 24th edition of our Newsletter.

We are delighted to announce Westminster Synagogue will host a Scroll Gathering at Kent House 4th February 2024.

1564 scrolls that survived the Shoah in Prague, were saved from further deterioration under the communists and brought to London in 1964, thanks to the generosity of Ralph Yablon who donated them to the Westminster Synagogue. Subsequently the Memorial Scrolls Trust was set-up as an independent charity to care for the scrolls, retaining close links with the synagogue.

Westminster Synagogue and the Memorial Scrolls Trust look forward to welcoming Scroll Holder Communities and their scrolls to our celebratory service to mark the rescue of the scrolls and their arrival in Knightsbridge, London.
