DESCRIPTION:Presentation by author Martin Bodek. \nLink: https://mybook.to/ZRK9S0 \nMy grandfather’s story involves serving four armies under wildly unique circumstances\, being present for both the largest land invasion in human history and the final battle of WWII\, avoiding cannibalism under pain of death\, eluding poisoning\, surviving to walk 1\,600 miles to his home country of Romania\, emigrating to Israel\, enduring the pummeling of his new community of Haifa during the Six Day War\, finally settling in peace in the U.S. where he served as a chef for 40 years\, and finished Shas (Talmud) 14 times while he was doing all that. He passed away 8 years ago at the age of 95.

DESCRIPTION:WE WELCOME SUQUAMISH ELDER BARBARA LAWRENCE\nAt a time when white nationalism is on the rise\, Shir Hayam is ramping up engagement with issues of social justice and diversity at the ground level. One effort underway is outreach to strengthen ties with the Suquamish Tribe\, our Indigenous neighbors. \nOn Sunday March 14 at 11 AM Shir Hayam welcomes Suquamish Tribal elder Barbara Lawrence. Barbara was for years the Suquamish Museum’s official story-teller and is currently the Tribe’s Outreach Coordinator. Her talk will feature Suquamish history\, geography\, art and herbal lore. She will share Suquamish stories\, and speak to her Tribe’s deep and abiding connection to their ancestral land. \nThe Shir Hayam community has offered support to the bereaved family of Stonechild Chiefstick in the form of a donation to help underwrite a memorial the family plans to build. Chiefstick\, an enrolled Chippewa Cree and cherished member of the extended Suquamish Tribal community\, was killed by a Poulsbo police officer on July 3\, 2019.  Chiefstick is buried in Seabold Cemetery\, and so his gravesite is adjacent to Shir Hayam’s plots there.

Meet at the Winery of Bainbridge Vineyards (Parking at Winery). \nJoin us for a special Shabbat in the vineyards\, including a locally grown farm walk and wine tasting.  Hosted by Jon Garfunkel.  Weather permitting\, we’ll take an hour before sunset to walk amidst the beauty and take in the rich history of these 40 acres\, while saying our blessings in the vineyards. Returning to the winery\, we will gather for our potluck meal.
