COMMUNITY

The community says a heartfelt Misheberach for the recovery of Tom Schaeffer and Linda Golden from their recent surgeries.

We send Carol & Mel off, with love, as they temporarily relocate to Philadelphia to be near family.

Our deep condolences to the Golden family on the loss of their dear sister-in-law Kathryn Golden.

SHABBAT

July 17th 6 pm Shabbat service led by Sharon and Nina in the Shir Hayam Zoom Room.

July18th 9-9:30 am Dick and Linda will lead a Shabbat morning meditation in the Shir Hayam Zoom Room.

July 31st We would love someone to step up for a Shabbat on the 31st! It needn’t be elaborate. Email the Ruach committee to volunteer.

MEMBERSHIP

It’s that time of year again. The new fiscal year began on June 1 and we would like everyone to take the time to download the membership form here and send it in.

At this time, when many families are under extra financial pressure, and when other needs within our communities are calling for our support, your Coordinating Committee wishes to remind you that Shir Hayam dues are always voluntary and confidential. No stigma attaches to any household making the decision to contribute less than the suggested dues amount in any given year.

Voluntary dues paid by members are important: they enable our events; support our presence, outreach, and practice of Tikkun Olam in the greater community; and maintain our financial health as an organization. But please know that the current state of our balance sheet is strong. We support you in making the best decision for your family and your community.

You can mail your form in to Chavurat Shir Hayam, P.O. Box 11142, Bainbridge Island, WA  98110 or fill it in, scan it and email it us at our new membership email address.

VOS TUT ZICH?

Every other Wednesday we gather together and schmooze. Tune in, check in with friends, let us know how you are doing. It’s always good to see your Shana Punim! July dates – 8th & 22nd. In the Shir Hayam Zoom Room.

HIGH HOLIDAYS

Shir Hayam is holding lay-led services for High Holidays 5781. WE NEED LEADERS! Realistically, we are most likely looking at Zoom Services, although we have a reservation for Fil-Am Hall. Email the Ruach committee if you are willing to lead.

CEMETERY

Work is continuing at our section of the Seabold Cemetery. Elliot, Molly and Cay pulled those big nasty roots out in the western set of plots – worst thing was how various root systems interwove among themselves, but they got the big ‘uns, thanks to the equipment Elliot brought!

Dick, Paul, Rick, Nathan and Cay worked on the wall – lifting, shifting, stacking, wise-cracking….  Funny how much work goes into placing every foot of length and height!  A 3-or-4-dimensional puzzle!

ANNUAL MEETING

Chavurat Shir Hayam’s Annual Meeting was held in the Zoom room on June 28th, with sixteen households attending. Cay Vandervelde facilitated, Robin Hruska created our sacred container with opening and closing Kavanah, Paul Travis led us into the meeting with a reading of our Mission Statement, and Mike Orr served as scribe and Zoom technician. Representatives of each Shir Hayam committee reported on past activities and plans for the coming year, and led Q&A/discussion for their committees’ areas of work.

Denise Brown presented a financial overview and the 2020-2021 proposed budget, which was unanimously approved.

On behalf of the Coordinating Committee, Dee Axelrod presented a slate of nominations for CC membership in 2020-2021; it was unanimously approved. Thanks go to Carol Rappaport, who is stepping down, Cay Vandervelde, who is joining, and Dee, Jessica Hanford, Mike Orr, Nina Rogozen, Rachel Kerbrat, and Sharon Rutzick, who will be continuing to serve.

Members discussed when and under what conditions we’ll return to in-person gatherings, or perhaps – if we can come up with a way – combined in-person and remote gatherings. Given the many uncertainties around this topic, no clear answer emerged. We’ll likely be learning and adjusting our plans to new information for some time to come.
