OUR CONDOLENCES

Our comfort and love goes out to Heather and the Palmer family, as they grieve for her mother, Ann Tiff Nelson Bush, who died on Wednesday, 3/23/16, may her memory be a blessing.  As some of you know, Heather’s mother struggled with her health over the last two years, and Heather has often been with her in California.

We gathered at the Palmer’s for a shivah minyan to say Kaddish, sing and hear stories of Heather’s mother’s life as professional violinist who traveled the world  giving concerts with her husband, also a violinist. Baruch Dayan HaEmet,  Blessed is the True Judge—- Blessed are even life’s hardest truths.

A THANK YOU

Denise received this lovely Thank You note meant for all of us and included were these photographs of Cedar with his Bar Mitzvah gift.

Hi Denise
I wonder if there is an easy way of forwarding this thank you to the generous Shir Hayam tribe who contributed to the Tsaddaka box gift.  It is sooo beautiful! Thank you!

ANNUAL MEETING

MAY 15, 2016 – Shir Hayam Annual Meeting  (This year’s meeting is going to be a blast!)

LOCATION: We are meeting at PRU’S HOUSE, a wonderful house owned and leased by Bainbridge Island Metro Parks and Recreation. It sits upon a large, wide-open, grassy area in the Grand Forest called HILLTOP.  There is a kitchen, but no stove.

TIME: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. ACCESS: Accessible by car; see directions below. (Hike up if you want to.) BRING: Snacks to share; the Coordinating Committee will be providing some good stuff as well. CHILD CARE: There is a separate room for young Shir Hayamers to play in, as well as the open field. Please let Nina know by May 1 if you will be needing child care so we can line up a teenager to babysit. (email Nina) Please include children’s ages in your email. OLDER KIDS: All are welcome to participate in the dancing, meetings and discussions, or play in the field outside the house.

FLOW: ISRAELI DANCING – with a teacher and demonstration assistants., GENERAL BUSINESS MEETING – (committee reports, budget approval, election of new Coordinating Committee members). SHORT BREAK – Eat more snacks! Maybe dance a little more. DISCUSSION – Break into small groups of 4 – 5 to discuss what brings people to Shir Hayam events/our community. Report back to large group. DISCUSSION – Break into small groups of 6 – 8 and (1) discuss our community presence—is it enough; should we be more visible on B.I. and in North Kitsap? (2) Brainstorm activities/events that would provide us with more social time together and bring more people to our wonderful Chavurah, e.g., movie nights, dance evenings, Sunday hikes, speakers.

We hope to see everyone there! The Coordinating Committee

RUACH SURVEY

Thank you to all who filled out our HHD survey. We have decided to continue in the tradition of mostly lay led services this fall. We are going to ask some professionals that we know if they could recommend anyone in the area with either rabbinical and/or Jewish religious studies background who might help lead our Erev Rosh Hashanah service. This suggestion grew out of the survey results. If you would like to see the results of the survey you are welcome to read them. Here is the link. https://www.surveymonkey.com/results/SM-BNY8J8VS/

TIKKUN OLAM CHARITY SPOTLIGHT/EARTH MONTH PROJECT

Have a favorite charity? Send in the link and some information about it and I will post it here. This month, just in time for Earth Day, we are spotlighting the Bainbridge Island Land Trust.

The Bainbridge Island Land Trust, started in 1989,  and others Island groups were concerned about growth on Bainbridge Island and established the Land Trust to provide a mechanism for landowners to protect and preserve their property. To date, the Land Trust has helped to permanently protect over 1,300 acres of our Island’s natural landscape, more than 1,000 acres of which are open to the public. It holds 47 conservation easements (42 private and 5 public) on over 750 acres. It owns another 78 acres. And another 484 acres have been preserved through acquisition efforts with Land Trust assistance.

This month they are sponsoring a FREE Island-Wide Invasive Clean-Up. Invasive plant species threaten native plants and wildlife. Rid your yard and garden of invasive species during the month of April and Let’s Pull Together and Bainbridge Island Land Trust will pick up the tab!

WHEN: Dispose of your invasive material at no cost to you each Sunday in April from 10am-4pm (4/3, 4/10, 4/17 & 4/24)
WHERE: Bainbridge Disposal Transfer Station, 7215 Vincent Road on Bainbridge Island
WHAT: English ivy (Hedera helix), Scotch broom (Cytisus scoparius), Spurge laurel (Daphne laureola), English holly (Ilex aquifolium), Butterfly bush (Buddleja davidii), Himalayan blackberry (Rubus armeniacus), Perennial Pepperweed (Lepidium latifolium), Other invasives listed on Kitsap County’s “Dirty Dozen” (see website for more info).

This is a great opportunity for our Island Community to remove and dispose of invasive species that threaten native plants and wildlife.

Next month your favorite charity can be in the spotlight!

Shalom! Open For Business Travels to the Washington State History Museum this Spring

April 30th – July 17th, 2016

The WSJHS’s newest exhibit, Shalom! Open For Business, will be on display in the community gallery at the Washington State History Museum. The award-winning exhibit features merchant tales from the late 19th and early 20th century. Around that time, Jewish immigrants arrived from both Eastern and Central Europe and the Mediterranean. Possessing different cultures but sharing a common faith, they set up shop– and shops– across the Puget Sound region and our entire state to build better lives for their families.

Information on planning your visit is available on the Washington State Historical Society’s website.
