TIKKUN OLAM
Cropwalk 2015 – We didn’t break our record but we came pretty close. Chavurat Shir Hayam raised $2,379 to date for this year’s Crop Hunger Walk sponsored by BI/NK Interfaith Council on Sunday, Sept. 27. Close to 100 walkers participated in the event. There’s still time to donate, if you haven’t already – click here: SHIR HAYAM CROP WALK TEAM.
Thank you again to all those made this year’s walk a success. Close to $600 of the Shir Hayam Team funds will stay in our community to assist those in need at our local food banks. See below for a note from Amber Blake (excerpt), the CROP Walk regional director.
… since 1996, you’ve helped to raise $711,488.42, with $180,428.31 supporting local food initiatives. It’s hard to know what that means to communities, so I wanted to provide some price points to help put it in perspective: That amount provides nearly 36,000 villages with biosand filters so that they can drink clean water; in times of crisis when people must flee their homes, $711,000 links 6,400 families of five access to a month’s worth of nutritious food, oftentimes using sources as close as possible to those in need; in areas devastated by deforestation and desertification, $711,000 allows almost 4.1 million trees seedlings to be planted so that erosion is held at bay and water is stored/filtered. You are making (and have made) a tremendous difference to the vulnerable among us, and to the environment we share!
We are so privileged to have Bainbridge Island as one of 107 walks around the nation this weekend, and one of 1,300 walks held this year. The movement to change the hunger equation is growing, and it’s thanks to the many communities like yours that we can build hope for abundance.
High Holiday – Lost & Found

HAPPENING ON BAINBRIDGE
Helpline House Seeks Volunteers – With our lovely summer coming to an end and the children back in school it may be time to look at new schedules and time commitments moving into the fall and winter months.
With that in mind please give some consideration to supporting Helpline House’s mission to “help one neighbor at a time”. Helpline House depends on many volunteers to work in the food bank, pick up or shop for food at local markets or participate in special programs like the upcoming Thanksgiving and Holiday Food Drives.
It’s easy to submit an online application at Helpline House.org. or email volunteerservices@helplinehouse.org. Self-scheduling and regular assignments are available now. Become one of the volunteers that make our island a better place.

The Dirty Laundry of Domestic Violence
All too often, women are encouraged to keep their abuse a secret, to hide their experiences, to feel ashamed of what happened. Project DVORA strives to create the conditions in the Jewish community that support loving, save and respectful relationships and to build capacity in the community to respond to domestic abuse. The goal is to create change on all levels; personally, politically and culturally. It makes clear that violence against women is not acceptable. Contact Project DVORA for confidential support, (206) 461-3240.
