TENT CITY VISIT

This Tent City visit crew included Danielle, Jon, Sadie, Silas, Mason, Lisa, Julie S, Lucas, Leo, Deborah Abrams, Bayla A, Hannah A, Sammy A, Mona, Craig and Zann.  There were some wonderful t-shirts decorated to order by the kids, including one Sadie did for the mother of her three month son of his footprints at birth, a colorfully decorated shirt for one camper’s sweetie by Lucas, a UFO by Leo, a Seahawks shirt by Silas, and a tiger shark by Sadie.  And the scarves we made from felt, and the brunch, lovingly planned and wrapped by Danielle and Lisa, were all well appreciated.  As were the loads of winter things that so many of you donated and collected!  So many thanks to all who donated food and cooked– Mike & Mark, Jane, Heather, Julie, Dinah, Lisa and Danielle!  And many thanks to all the Chavurah for supporting the cost of food, too.  What a motivated, kind and talented group!

It’s heartening to see that in the years we’ve been visiting Tent City 5 there have been so many positive changes.  The first time things were pretty sketch, and we well remember visiting in the winter a year ago when the dining area was made of two adjoining unheated tents that leaked down the middle and on all sides.  Now virtually everyone is in tiny homes, maybe 6′ X 8′, and the dining area is in one big heated tent– and it feels like a happy and self-organized community when you show up there.

The Hebrew root of the word mitzvah is “connection,” and our trip to Tent City allows us to connect, person to person, in such an open-hearted way, and to share a bit of our plenty with those who could really use it.
