ROBIN HRUSKA’S BIG ADVENTURE – Part 1

Our own Robin Hruska is on her way to the village of Margen in the Kangchenjunga region of Nepal. For the next three months she’s going to be helping with the startup of a new school: teaching an uncertain range of age levels and working with a new teacher.

In 2012, Robin trekked near Annapurna with husband Mike Orr; at that time she fell in love with the village children and also saw a great hunger for education among many of the rural parents. She’s thought about returning ever since, and retirement from the BI School District after the 2013-2014 year brought the opportunity to combine her love of travel, the incomparable natural beauty of the Himalaya, and the joy of working with children in an environment that’s all about them.

The setting is very, very remote. Robin isn’t expecting much to be in place beyond the school building and a freshly minted teacher. She’s bringing four duffel bags full of supplies, many of which were donated (many by Shir Hayam members – thank you!) Some, such as the Devanagari math worksheets, were homemade. In the months leading up to the trip Robin worked hard to learn some basics of the Nepali language. The language game will still be a challenge, though hopefully a lot of fun too. (For the first month, she’ll have the help of an English-speaking Nepali guide.)

There’s supposed to be a satellite phone in the village. If Robin can find it, and it’s working, and she has the right phone card… we should hear from her soon. Mike has all his fingers and toes crossed!

from Arik:

Dear Friends,  I want to invite you all to join us this year at the second annual Pardes Retreat which will take place on the beautiful and sacred grounds of Indianola Camp and Retreat Center on the weekend of March 27-29th.

Together we will co-create a Shabbas in the Garden and inspire our creative spirits through Jewish story, music, dance, prayer and art. We will deepen our connection to Pesach and the return of spring, and we will connect with our warm, vibrant, open-hearted Jewish community.  Much love, Arik
