• Education: schools teach habits of healthy homes, business skills, and how to increase farming output enhances healthcare, alternative income and food security

• Clean Water and Sanitation: preventing water-borne illness enhances healthcare; allowing girls and women to spend less time fetching water and more time attending school or setting-up small business enhances education and alternative income

• Health: children healthy to thrive enhances education; quickly treating illness ensures that people do not lose their savings and enhances alternative income

• Alternative Income and Livelihood: profits from small business ensures the community has the means to repair water projects, pay school fees, support medical projects, and re-invest into farms – all of which enhances the sustainability of water & sanitation, education, medical and food security

• Agriculture and Food Security: children at school with a full stomach ready to learn enhances education; a proper diet preventing illness enhances healthcare

We hope to see everyone there! Thank you, Bayla and Julie

ANNUAL MEETING

Please mark your calendar and plan to attend the Shir Hayam Annual Meeting — Sunday June 1 from 10 to 12. Location to be determined. We’ll be sending out more information with an agenda over the next couple of weeks. Along with taking care of annual business — committee updates, budget approval, selecting next year’s steering committee members — it’s time for us to connect as a community and nosh on some bagels, cream cheese, fruit and other snacks. This will be fun. We promise ;-).

PAUL’S EVENT REVIEWS

Chavurim, I know how easy it is to feel overwhelmed with the ever-widening list of opportunities and activities in modern life — but I wanted to share with you my experience of 2 events listed on the Shir Hayam calendar recently. No, this is not a suitable replacement for attending, but instead a reminder that very cool things are going on in our community. — Paul Travis

Music of Remembrance

Last Friday night, about a dozen performers — including singers, violinist, pianist, clarinetist, and more — came to the beautiful Grace Church and performed music I’d never heard (or heard of). This organization, www.musicofremembrance.org, was formed to honor the many Jewish musicians, composers, and other artists who perished in the Holocaust.

Each piece was explained beforehand, who wrote it or how it came to be, something of their life before being sentenced to the concentration camps, and then the performance. Most of those in attendance were from Grace, not Shir Hayam, but we all walked away mesmerized. Some was klezmeresque, others were haunting — all beautiful. So much so that I bought one of the CD’s on Amazon afterward. Memorable and moving — and free to boot.

The Pardes Retreat

A couple dozen people, from Bellingham to Olympia (and a handful from Shir Hayam!) spent the weekend of April 11-13 at Camp Indianola. Led and planned by Zann Jacobrown and Arik Labowitz, we had a wonderful meal and “connection exercise” Friday night.

Saturday morning there was yoga (optional), guided meditation on the beach, Torah reading, and meals working around most dietary issues. The evening concluded with a bonfire, singing, and storytelling — along with an amazing full moon. Sunday morning, after yoga and breakfast, we did some group creations, sharing, rope swinging, and prayers for the week and the next year. “Next Year in Indianola” was heard by many — hopefully with those of you who missed out this year!

RUACH HA’ARETZ SUMMER RETREAT

Tivona (Stephanie) Reith & Hanna Tiferet Siegel are teachers this year, as well as others.

Tivona (Stephanie) Reith’s class description:

Cosmology, Psychology, Symbology:

Jungian Astrology and the Kabbalistic Tree of Life

An Exploration led by Tivona (Stephanie) Reith, Chaplain and Jungian Astrologer

As ancient peoples peered up into the heavens and about them at all of creation, there arose an impulse to discern a symbolic structure underlying the mystery of the cosmos. Astrology and Kabbalah arose from those impulses, and psychologist Carl Jung explored both systems through the lens of his notion of the collective unconscious. In this class, we will explore the symbolic intersections of astrological planets and signs, Kabbalistic sephirot, and Jungian archetypes, and the ways in which these create beauty and meaning of outer cosmos and inner psychology. Astrology charts will be created for each participant, in order to interactively explore this symbology through our own personal experience.
